The inauguration of the new headquarters of Crédito Agrícola do Alentejo Central on July 19th was marked by the presence of the Secretary of State for Agriculture, João Moura.
On the sidelines of the initiative, he told journalists that "this was a very symbolic ceremony of what has been the journey of this centenary credit institution in our country, which has been the guarantor and the help in the most remote places of Portugal of great proximity to the rural world and the farmer".
For the minister, "the presence here of the Ministry of Agriculture is a sign of gratitude for what they have done over the decades for Portuguese agriculture and farmers".
He considered that "Caixa has been an institution that has believed in an activity that has many specificities, which is agricultural activity, which has a higher risk, which is dependent on external factors that man cannot always control", stressing that, "in this sense, Caixa has been a loyal partner of Portuguese agriculture".
Speaking in general terms about the agricultural sector, the Secretary of State said that "the first major task we have in hand is to give prestige and dignity to an activity that has been much depreciated by the Portuguese population, by those who are more concentrated in urban areas and who don't have a more intrinsic and close knowledge of what the activities of the rural world are, which represents the vast majority of the national territory".
In this context, he stressed that "the first major mission is to help deconstruct the negative image that exists of this activity, including among younger people who, for example, have not chosen this area in higher education".
João Moura stressed that "the products made in Portugal at all different levels, whether it's olive oil, almonds, pork, red fruits, rock pears, cheese or wine, are considered the best in the world", pointing out that "they should fill those who produce them with pride and give them away for the privilege of those who are Portuguese consumers".
He also announced that "we are making a big bet on internationalization and exporting our products so that other countries have the same privilege we have."
