Portuguese

Duck River Agriculture is a Portuguese company. Our people live here, our crops grow here and 100% of our company's focus is here.

More than that: almonds were tended by the Celts and Romans who inhabited Portugal millennia before the first almond tree was planted in California by Spanish missionaries, sowing the seeds for California's dominance of the almond business today. Portuguese ships crossed the globe laden with the products of this country centuries before the first Australian almond was unloaded in Europe.

Duck River Agriculture aims to build on this heritage of almond growing and global trade to develop a truly world-leading industry here in the heart of Portugal.

Global

People often ask about our name, Duck River Agriculture, and why it's in English. The answer comes from our love of history and our global perspective.

We named Duck River after the Guadiana, one of the great rivers of Portugal and representative of the country's rich culture. To the Romans it was Flumen Anas, the "river of ducks" described by Caesar and Pliny. To the Moors, this became Wadi Anas in their language. To the Portuguese, the Guadiana. And to all of them a source of fertility, wealth and beauty.

Water is at the heart of any farming enterprise, so we chose to put it in our name. "Duck River" to evoke water, Portugal and the farmers of ancient cultures who came before; English to make clear our place at the centre of the global stage. That stage allows us to benefit from knowledge and experience wherever it arises, and sell our products everywhere there's demand. In short, to build a company that can compete at a global scale. It also allows us to draw capital from around the world to our enterprise here in Portugal. We are clear on one point, however: capital can, and should, come from anywhere; decision-making should rest firmly in the hands of people who understand the business and are intimately involved with its workings on the ground.

Modern

We're rooted in love of land and the values that being a farmer entails. But when it comes to growing techniques, the modern world has a lot to offer. Our goal is to produce the highest yields from the fewest resources of any grower in the world, and to achieve that we embrace technological developments and innovations.

From micro-drip irrigation to super high-density planting and mechanical harvesting, from software-based monitoring to custom fertiliser blends, we aim to be at the cutting edge of producing more, with less. That means being open to partnerships with universities and research centres, with scientists and young technology companies and – as farmers have always done – being open to exchanging discoveries with our neighbours.

Field

Traditional

More than anyone else, farmers are stewards and guardians. They're stewards of the soil and water, the landscapes that make a place unique and the birds and animals that inhabit it. They're stewards of culture, the food that defines people and makes life worth living and the way of life that underlies so many of our myths and beliefs.

Our team weren’t born as farmers. They chose to be close to agriculture and the land because they love it, and we take our duty of stewardship to heart. That means looking after the resources we use, the land we farm and the creatures with whom we share it. And since the best food is natural food, it means being selective in our methods and rigorous in understanding what goes into everything we produce.

These roots in tradition extend to our philosophy as business people. A company can't be successful over the long term if its existence harms its community. No business is longer-term than farming, so it's more important for a farming company to benefit its community than anyone else.

Track

Financial

If you want to be in business for a long time, you need to keep your finances front and centre. Duck River Agriculture is a young company, but a strong one. Thanks to the support of our investors, we enjoy considerable financial resources. Thanks to the prudence of our managers, those resources translate into a powerful and stable business.

If we’re successful in our operations, we’ll be rewarded by earning a return on our investment – but that doesn’t happen overnight. We need to stay in the game for the long run to earn our return. This entails being cautious in our risk-taking, sensible in our financing, conservative in our use of resources, transparent and fair in our business relationships and supportive of our communities and employees. Over the decades there will always be ups and downs, but a company built to be globally competitive will weather any storm.

The opportunities in Portuguese agriculture are enormous, and we plan to grow Duck River for many years to come. Our team combines significant sources of capital with dedicated managers, agricultural experts, experienced lawyers and accountants and a global network of contacts to help us achieve, and deserve, our profit.

Almonds

Personal

Duck River Agriculture wasn’t born out of an economist’s dissertation – it grew out of a series of chance meetings between people who shared a vision and values and had the skills to build a company together.

When you work with people you like, respect and admire it doesn't feel like work any more. You work more productively, more effectively and you want to do it for a longer period of time. And those people could be any age (Duck River's founders range from their 20s to their 60s, for example!) and from any background. Energy, curiosity and enthusiasm are what count; energy, curiosity and enthusiasm always win.

That reality is the core of our business philosophy. When great people cross our paths, as employees, advisers, business partners, suppliers, customers or purely by chance, we try to find ways to keep working together and give them the trust and responsibility to advance both our interests.

This is perhaps nowhere more true than in agriculture. Farming involves long, hard hours spent with other people, working together, relying on each other and succeeding or failing together. Outside the rigid framework of a city or a corporation, trust, reliability and honesty matter more than ever – and that’s exactly the way we like it.
